Insurance Services

The global business landscape continues to expand, and so do the risks associated with moving goods through the global supply chain.

How much would you expect to recover if your shipment is lost or damaged?

When goods in transit are found lost or damaged, the owner of the goods has the right to file a claim to recover money from the carrier. However, carriers pay only if they are proven to be responsible for causing the loss. Even if a carrier is found at fault, there are still limits to how much the carrier is required to pay, determined by transportation mode and specific international conventions, treaties, as well as domestic and international governing bodies. Some circumstances such as acts of God and acts of war may even cause damage or loss to fall outside of the carrier’s liability.

Carrier Claim Limit

Statute Shipping Mode Carrier Liability Limitation
Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (COGSA) Ocean $500 per Customary Freight Unit
Warsaw Convention (International) Air $9.07 per pound or $20 per kilo
Montreal Protocol (International) Air 22 Special Drawing Rights (SDRs)
Warehouse Operators (based on receipt) Air $0.50 per pound and/or $50 per shipment
Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (COGSA) Ocean $500 per Customary Freight Unit
